When you buy lobster tails, size decides how the meal feels: a light starter, a classic dinner, or the center of a celebration. The quick answer is 5 oz for appetizers, 6 oz for surf and turf, 7 oz for a standard dinner, and 9 oz for special occasions.
This guide shows how much meat each size gives you, which size fits which meal, how fresh and frozen tails differ, and when our 10 lb frozen box makes sense.
How Much Meat Do You Get From a Lobster Tail?
A tail's listed weight includes the shell. Cooked meat is roughly 50 to 60 percent of that weight, so a 6 oz tail gives you about 3 to 3.5 oz of meat. Unlike Maine lobster, Florida spiny lobster keeps most of its meat in the tail, and that meat is firm and sweet.
Here is what to expect from each size:
- 5 oz tail: about 2.5 to 3 oz of cooked meat
- 6 oz tail: about 3 to 3.5 oz of cooked meat
- 7 oz tail: about 3.5 to 4 oz of cooked meat
- 9 oz tail: about 4.5 to 5.5 oz of cooked meat

Our fresh tails are sold one tail at a time in weight ranges: 5 to 6 oz, 6 to 7 oz, 7 to 8 oz, and 9 to 10 oz. Tails are a natural product, so treat each size as a guide rather than an exact weight.
Should You Buy Fresh or Frozen Lobster Tails?
Buy fresh during the season and frozen when you want to stock up.
Fresh tails are available while the Florida lobster season runs, from August to the end of March. They are harvested fresh and shipped the next day. As the season nears its end, freshly frozen tails may ship instead, depending on availability. Cook or freeze fresh tails within 24 hours of arrival, which keeps the meat from darkening.
Frozen tails are flash-frozen at the peak of freshness. They keep in your freezer for up to 6 months, and you should thaw them in the refrigerator for the best quality.

Is the 10 lb Frozen Box Worth It?
Yes, if you are hosting a crowd, feeding a big family, or stocking the freezer. The box weighs 10 lb, and the number of tails depends on the size you choose:
- 5 oz tails: about 32 tails
- 6 oz tails: about 26 to 27 tails
- 7 oz tails: about 22 to 23 tails
- 9 oz tails: about 17 to 18 tails
- 10 oz tails: about 16 tails
That is 16 to 32 tails per box. A box of 6 oz tails, for example, covers a dinner for 20 with a few tails to spare. Smaller tails stretch further, and larger tails give you more meat per tail. Because frozen tails keep up to 6 months, plan to enjoy the whole box within that window. Availability changes by size, so check the product page before you order.
